Rust is a naturally occurring sediment that builds up over time. To combat this, the tank should be drained at regular intervals so that it doesn’t get out of hand. However, eventually the rust will win, and the tank will have to be replaced.

Large sediment masses can form inside the tank as a result of constant heating. After a while this solid mass can start to bang around inside the tank. This can cause damage and leaks to occur. Not to mention sound quite alarming.
