Mold thrives in warm, damp areas, making the bathroom the perfect breading ground for mold. The truth of the matter is, is that we are constantly surrounded by mold. It’s a natural occurrence, and for the most part, is harmless. However, not all mold is created equal, and some mold, can be dangerous and make people very sick. People that suffer from allergies, or have a compromised immune system are more susceptible to the dangers of mold exposure. Aside from certain health risks, mold can be unsightly and permeates an undesirable smell. All of which is why treating and preventing bathroom mold is important.

KNOW HOW TO SPOT THE SIGNS

Mold in bathroom

The first part of treating and preventing bathroom mold is to be able to identify it. There are several ways to identify mold. First, be aware of the smell. Mold has a very distinctive smell. It smells earthy, kind of like soil. The smell of mold may be the first indication that mold exists. Next, know what mold looks like. There are several different kinds of mold that can vary in color from grey, green, red, white, brown, and black. Black mold is the most dangerous of all molds.

IDENTIFY THE CAUSE

Another important part of treating and preventing bathroom mold is identifying the cause. Excessive mold growth can be the result of poor bathroom ventilation, a leak, or the presence of damp towels, rugs, walls, and curtains. Proper ventilation is important in treating and preventing bathroom mold. Many times, a faulty exhaust fan is a culprit. To check your exhaust fan, simply turn it on and hold a piece of toilet paper or paper towel to it. If the suction is good it will hold onto it. Undetected leaks are also problematic. Ongoing leak detection is a good idea to help prevent mold buildup.

REMOVAL OF MOLD

When treating and preventing mold, it is important to remove any mold that has been able to grow. Check all caulking for mold growth. The affected area should be removed and replaced. Also, wipe down affected areas with bleach, and make sure the area is well ventilated. If a large area of mold is found, contact a professional for proper mold remediation. Improper handling of a heavily affected area can be harmful and make people sick if not treated properly.

PREVENTION OF MOLD

The removal of mold is only half the battle. The next step is to take preventative measures to make sure mold can’t grow and thrive. To prevent mold, always make sure to run the exhaust fan, and make sure it is running long enough to remove the excess moisture. Invest in a mold proof shower curtain and wash at regular intervals. Also, wash towels and rugs frequently. In addition, being proactive with your leak detection is a good way to ensure that mold growth will not get out of control.
