Heat Pump Installation

Heat pumps are the heating and cooling technology of the future. They use an outdoor unit to pull in heat from the outside air, transferring it to an indoor unit and registers to spread warm air through your home. For cooling, the process works in reverse. The installation process of these systems requires the work of certified professionals, given all of the complicated and hazardous equipment involved. At John Owens Services, our HVAC technicians are licensed and trained in handling the most complex heat pump installations.

Ducted Systems

These types of heat pump systems are able to link to any pre-existing ductwork in your home to deliver warm air inside or remove it outside.

Ductless Systems

These consist of a single outdoor unit connected without ductwork to either a single indoor unit or multiple units that can offer zoned heating and cooling in different parts of your home.

Air-to-air

This type of system, from trusted brands such as Mitsubishi and American Standard, will transfer warm air out of your home for cooling and pull in warm air from outside for heating.

Air-to-water

These types of systems can provide both space and water heating. They can be used with radiant flooring to send hot water through tubes in your floors to achieve home heating or to plumbing fixtures for hot water.

Heat pumps work well in our climate zone because of the mild climate we have with few extreme temperatures. Though they are most efficient in warmer weather, they are still 100% efficient down to 37 degrees. This is because they are more efficient with the more warmth they can extract from the outside. For areas with regular snow or extremely low temperatures, a hyper-heat unit may be the more useful option.

You do not have to panic because this is actually normal behavior for the unit. As the weather gets colder, heat pumps will have to go into a defrost cycle, since the coils can occasionally frost up. When this defrost cycle runs, it will create steam that rises from the unit and can easily be mistaken for smoke. You will notice defrost cycles happening more frequently in extremely cold weather.

A heat pump moves heat from one place to another to provide warmth or coolness in the house, rather than something like a gas or propane furnace burning fuel to create heat. With heat pumps, it will take longer to warm up the house the colder it is outside since there is less heat in the outside air to transfer inside. So if you’re finding that the house is taking a while to heat up, it simply means there is a low amount of heat in the outside air to transfer inside the registers. In this case, keeping your unit at a set temperature and running at a low pace is recommended.
