Causes of Water Pressure Issues

Water pressure issues are one of the most common plumbing problems people face. Too little water pressure, even too much water pressure can be an indication that there is something wrong with your plumbing system. Water pressure issues are often one of the first things you might notice if you have a plumbing problem, so addressing your water pressure issues in a timely manner is the best way to prevent unnecessary plumbing problems.

Water pressure issues are commonly caused by:

  • Fixtures that need replacing
  • Issues with water valves
  • Clogged or corroded pipes
  • A malfunctioning pressure regulator
  • Inadequate water supply line

Low water pressure is probably the most common out of the 2 water pressure issues. Low water pressure can be caused by a variety of reasons. You might have a water leak, there could be mineral buildup inside your pipes, or there could be a break in the main water line. Whatever the reason, low water pressure shouldn’t be ignored. You may learn to live with it, however, if you do have a leak you will want to get it repairs right away to prevent unnecessary water waste and cause damage to your home.

What Causes High Water Pressure?

When you have water shooting out of your faucet or showerhead, it could be quite alarming. High water pressure can be caused by living at the bottom of a hill, since the water’s natural path is to run downhill. It could be from your water company trying to keep up with demands, which often happens around fire hydrants and in taller buildings. Or it could be from your water causing thermal expansion inside your home. High water pressure should not be ignored, as it can cause damage to your plumbing system, damage appliances, damage your water heater, and cause unnecessary water waste. To regulate this, have a pressure regulator installed at your main water line. This will help keep your psi at the recommended 80 or below.
