Putting too much stress on your plumbing can have devastating effects. Most of the time people don’t give much thought to the stress they are putting on their plumbing. Plumbing is often out of sight out of mind, until there is an issue. It is important to be mindful of your plumbing to practice good habits and have the proper systems in place to protect it! Prevention is the best method to prevent a plumbing disaster! Here are 3 stresses that can wreak havoc on your plumbing.

#1 WATER PRESSURE

When we talk about water pressure, most people automatically think about low water pressure. But, did you know that there can also be too much water pressure? Low water pressure can indicate a leak or a disturbance somewhere down the line. Low water pressure is often a sign that there is a more serious plumbing problem afoot and should be addressed. High water pressure often occurs in multi-level buildings, or in homes that are downhill. High water pressure can cause your pipes to rattle and shake, which is never a good thing, as this can cause leaks. Residential water pressure should be no higher than 85 psi. To regulate this, a water pressure valve should be installed to reduce the stress and havoc on your plumbing.

#2 DRAINS AREN’T TRASH CANS

One of the most common causes of plumbing problems is improper use of drains. Sinks and toilets alike should never be used like trash cans. Your plumbing system is designed to remove wastewater, not things like: hair, paper (other than toilet paper), diapers, wipes, feminine products, glass, plastic, large food particles, bones, grease, fibrous food particles, or chemicals. All of these things can wreak havoc on your plumbing by forming obstructions that cause major clogs or cause damage to your pipes. If you have to question it, it should probably not go down the drain. Always watch what goes down the drain this also includes what you flush and install screens to prevent unwanted things from escaping down the drain.

#3 HARD WATER

Hard water is the result of the minerals that exist in the water. Hard water can wreak havoc on your plumbing by causing mineral buildup on your pipes, plumbing fixtures, and appliances. Over time too much buildup will lead to corrosion which can cause leaks and malfunction. All of which leads to costly repairs and replacement. To reduce the effects of hard water, a water softener should be installed. This will help extend the lifespan of your plumbing fixtures and water using appliances.

Regular maintenance like drain cleaning and ongoing leak detection is a great way to take care of your plumbing and reduce the stress it is under. To learn more about how to reduce the stresses that can wreak havoc on your plumbing please contact John Owens today!
