Summer is in full swing, with temperatures starting to peek. Having air conditioning problems is the last thing you want in the middle of a heat wave. One of the best ways to prevent air conditioning problems is regular maintenance form your air conditioning, however sometimes air conditioning problems can catch us off guard. Here are some common air conditioning problems and how to troubleshoot them.

AIR CONDITIONING NOT WORKING AT ALL

An air conditioning system that won’t even turn on could be the result of several things. The first thing you will want to check is whether or not the air conditioning unit is receiving power. Check the breaker to make sure it isn’t switched. You should also reset the unit’s switches. If the breaker keeps getting switched, then you may have an electrical problem, and you should hire an electrician to get to the root of it. Once you have ruled out an electrical problem, you will want to check the compressor’s capacitor and wires. The capacitor starts both the condensing unit and the fan, so if this is out neither will turn on. Checking the thermostat is also a good idea when troubleshooting your air conditioning not working well. The batteries could be out, or wire might be loose, or it could simply be time for a new thermostat.

AIR CONDITIONING TURNING ON BUT NOT COOLING

This could be the result of an obstruction blocking airflow, an issue with the refrigerant line, or an issue with the blower fan. Changing the vents at least once a year can help improve airflow and air quality. Having your ducts cleaned once a year can also help keep things flowing, not to mention remove dust, debris, mold, and germs that can cause illness and allergies. Aside from clearing obstructions, you should also check the compressor to make sure the fan is going. This may need to be reset. If resetting doesn’t work, then you may need to replace the capacitor. You should also have the coolant checked. It may need to be recharged by a professional.

AIR CONDITIONING MAKES LOUD NOISES

An air handler that makes loud squealing or grinding noises could mean that belt is misaligned or worn out. This is more common in older air conditioning units. Replacing the belt is a pretty simple fix. It could also mean that the bearings are shot, in which case having a professional AC technician is an appropriate action. The compressor is another common part that can make loud noises. A humming sound could indicate that the there is a low voltage issue with the unit. A buzzing sound could indicate the capacitor needs to be replaced, and if the compressor is making grinding sounds, it could mean that the bearings are wearing out, and it’s time to replace the motor.
